PRESS RELEASE - Encinitas City Council looks to  transition to district-based elections

 

ENCINITAS, CA - The Encinitas City Council adopted a resolution of intention on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 to transition from at-large to district-based elections. A lengthy public outreach effort will begin right away to work within the 90 day timeline provided by law.  

Cities across California have been voluntarily making the transition to district-based elections following allegations of violations to the California Voting Rights Act from a law firm in Los Angeles. By voluntarily changing to district-based elections, cities maintain their ability to have a say in district boundaries and avoid costly litigation

Similar to Encinitas, many neighboring cities have received a demand letter asserting the city is in violation of the California Voting Rights Act. The cities of Oceanside, San Marcos, Vista and Carlsbad are in the process of making the change.

A series of five public hearings will be held to receive input from residents and provide Council deliberation on the proposed change. The public hearing schedule is as follows:

All public hearings will take place at Encinitas City Hall, 505 South Vulcan.

In addition, there will be two public workshops for further discussion with a date yet to be determined.
